Mobile Computing - Brief Overview

Mobile Computing is a technology enabling data, voice, and video to be transmitted through a computer or any other wireless device without the need to be connected to a fixed physical link. The primary concept includes.

• Mobile communication
• Mobile hardware
• Mobile software

Mobile communication

The mobile communication in this case, refers to the infrastructure put in place to ensure that seamless and reliable communication goes on. These will include the necessary devices, such as protocols, services, bandwidth and portals, to enable and support the services mentioned. At this point, the data format is also specified. This means that other existing systems that provide the same service do not collide.

The overlaying infrastructure is essentially radio wave-oriented, because the media is unguided/unbounded. That is, to intended devices that are capable of receiving and transmitting similar signals, the signals are carried over the air.

Mobile Hardware

Mobile hardware includes mobile devices or components of devices that receive or access mobility services. They range from portable laptops, smartphones, personal digital assistants, tablet PCs, etc.

Such devices would have a receptor medium capable of sensing signals and receiving them. These devices are configured for full-duplex operation, allowing them to send and receive signals at the same time. They don't have to wait until one device has finished communicating to begin communication with the other device.

The devices mentioned above use an existing and developed network to operate on them. That will be a wireless network, in most situations.

Mobile software

The actual software that runs on mobile hardware is mobile software. It deals with the functionality and demands of mobile applications. This is the mobile device's engine. In other words, it is the appliance's operating system. The mobile device is the key component that operates.

This form of computing means that users are not tied or pinned to a single physical location, but are able to work from anywhere, because portability is the key factor. All aspects of wireless communications are incorporated.
